Kansas seniors Devonté Graham and Svi Mykhailiuk were co-winners of the 2018 Danny Manning “Mr. Jayhawk” Award for contributions on and off the court at Tuesday night’s postseason KU basketball awards banquet held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel.
“This year it’s easy to say who should win the award. It’s easy for me without question. They came in together and will go out together. No way (you can mention) one without the other. Devonté and Svi share it,” KU coach Bill Self said in handing out the program's only postseason award.
The banquet attracted more than 600 fans who celebrated a 31-8 season that included winning the school's NCAA-record 14th-consecutive Big 12 regular-season title, postseason tourney crown and the school reaching its 15th Final Four.
"I've been blessed to be here these four years and be a part of this team and make history with this team," Mykhailiuk said.
“"I want to thank you all for all your support," Graham told the crowd. "I want to thank you for all these four years. I loved every day here. We have the best coach in the nation. He brought the best out of us. Rock Chalk!"
There was no hard news at the banquet involving KU sophomore center Udoka Azubuike, who is in the process of deciding whether to return for his junior season or turn pro.
Azubuike also could choose to test the waters without an agent, and could always drop out of the draft pool before the June 21 draft. He has until April 22 to enter his name.
“I am still thinking about what I want to do, still haven’t made my decision,” Azubuike said after the banquet. “I spoke to my family about it, my mother about it. It’s pretty much my decision right now. I will think about it the next couple of days or the next week. I’ll probably (next week) make my decision on what I want to do.”
Of Azubuike’s decision, Self said: "Doke and I have visited. I don’t think he was ready to make a decision (Tuesday). I think there are pros to him testing. I also think there’s pros to him not testing. I think he is weighing his options now.
"I think it’ll have to be in the next week or so,” Self added of the decision. "I don’t think it’ll be tomorrow or anything. I don’t know where he is right now.”
