Bonuses, stipulations part of KU athletic director Sheahon Zenger’s contract extension

By Jesse Newell

Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger will have monetary — and contractual — reasons to pay close attention to football in the coming years, according to details of his contract extension released by KU Athletics on Tuesday.

Zenger’s new three-year deal, which pays him a $700,000 base annually and runs through 2021, includes a $40,000 bonus for each season the football team finishes with at least a 6-6 regular-season record. The extension also stipulates that on July 1 of each year, Zenger will submit to the Chancellor performance objectives for the coming year that “include progress toward establishing a successful football program.” Other performance objectives include:

• academic progress by student-athletes

• fiscal management

• fundraising

• increased departmental revenues

• additional competitive athletic accomplishments

• academic accomplishments

• NCAA rules compliance

• equal opportunity and Title IX compliance

Zenger also must deliver a subsequent progress report following the athletic year on June 1.

The extension also includes a buyout, as Zenger can be fired without cause for a maximum of two years’ salary — an amount at this time that would equal $1.4 million.

Zenger’s contract includes other small bonuses, as he will receive $5,000 if the women’s basketball team has a regular-season winning record and $5,000 if the men’s basketball team reaches the Elite Eight — a feat KU coach Bill Self has accomplished in four of the last seven seasons.

If Zenger leaves KU to take another college or professional sports position, he must pay half of his yearly salary — $350,000 for now — as damages to KU Athletics.

The extension, which was announced by KU on Sunday, was signed by Zenger nearly four weeks earlier on May 2. Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little, who is retiring later this summer and will be replaced by Douglas Girod, signed the document on May 4.
